We have been developing a pre-cut timber frame system to deliver highly insulated affordable buildings with increased on-site efficiency and minimised waste.
The frame is designed, thermally modelled and optimised via BIM. A second process of Nesting ensures a minimum amount of timber is used to cut the required elements. The cutting is done a on large computer controlled saw that cuts, labels and stacks the timbers into packs ready for efficient delivery and a quick easy erection site.
After refining the system on over ten projects the waste levels are now below 1%. We used it on our own studio where the frame was erected on existing foundations within an steel framed barn to create a low carbon exemplar and winner of the AJ Small Projects Sustainability award.
The frame is then boarded, taped and filled with wood fibre insulation creating an affordable Passivhaus level of airtightness and insulation.
