This scheme improves and increases the living accommodation of a characterful cottage in the Cotswolds. It was achieved in the form of a garden building as well as a small amount of internal re-arrangement of the cottage. Providing an additional living room, the new extension is connected to the main house via a short link. As a modern, light filled space directly connected to the garden it acts as a counter point to the more traditional spaces in the main house.
The form of the extension is that of a simple pitched roof structure, a shed which is clearly differentiated and subservient to the main house. Timber cladding was chosen to provide a soft, natural appearance along with a simple standing seam metal roof.
The new extension employs a ‘fabric first’ approach with high levels of insulation and high performance glazing creating an energy efficient addition.
